Stephen Meyers

Stephen Meyers, President

Stephen C. Meyers is President of SCM Associates and a nationally recognized leader in Republican direct response programs.

Meyers has almost thirty years years of experience coordinating direct mail and telemarketing programs for hundreds of political campaigns and organizations. During the 2008 and 2012 cycles, Meyers served as the direct response consultant for Governor Mitt Romney's presidential campaigns.

A four-time winner of the American Association of Political Consultants' Pollie Award for the best fundraising letter of the campaign cycle, Meyers has handled several of the most successful major direct mail programs for candidates, including Senator Scott Brown, Rick Lazio (New York Senate campaign against Hillary Clinton), Congresswoman Katherine Harris, and Congressman Bob Barr.

In addition to running successful direct response programs, Meyers has co-authored the National Republican Congressional Committee's Campaign Finance Manual. He has been a frequent speaker and trainer at campaign training seminars sponsored by Governing and Campaigns & Elections magazines and traveled to the Soviet Union in 1990 to train members of newly formed Soviet political parties. Meyers is a member of the International Association of Political Consultants, American Association of Political Consultants and the Direct Marketing Association of Washington.

Prior to forming SCM Associates, Meyers was a partner of Zadow & Meyers, Inc., a national direct mail firm. His previous experience included stints with Pete du Pont for President, the Massachusetts Republican Party and Ray Shamie's United States Senate bid (MA) in 1984.

Meyers is also the owner of Granite Lists, a direct mail list marketing company established in 2013.

A graduate of Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, Meyers has a BS degree in Management. He lives in Jaffrey, New Hampshire with his wife, Amy. In addition to a son and daughter, their household includes horses, miniature donkeys, goats, dogs, cats, and assorted fowl. He is an avid baseball fan and enjoys hiking, especially in New Hampshire's White Mountains.

Stephen Bates

Stephen Bates, Senior Vice President

Stephen Bates joined SCM Associates in 1998 and has handled a number of high-profile national, statewide, and congressional campaigns over the last 15 years.

His current clients include Governor Scott Walker, Senators Ron Johnson and Mark Kirk, Congressman Paul Ryan, and Prosperity PAC, among others.

Last cycle, Bates crafted and managed a national direct mail program that raised nearly $15 million while building the largest gubernatorial donor base in America for Governor Scott Walker's recall election in June.

Bates was also the direct response consultant for Congressman Paul Ryan. Prior to Ryan joining Governor Mitt Romney on the national ticket, Bates helped to build Ryan's congressional account to the largest cash-on-hand among all incumbent Members and his Prosperity PAC to one of the nation's top leadership PACs.

Before joining SCM Associates, Bates worked on several statewide, congressional, and local campaigns. He holds a BA in Political Science from American University.

Bates lives in Duxbury, Massachusetts with his wife, Nicole, and their two sons.

Lou Tavares

Lou Tavares, Vice President

Lou Tavares joined SCM Associates as Vice President following the 2012 election cycle and helps lead the firm's email fundraising efforts.

Lou's email fundraising clients have included Governor Scott Walker and Senator Scott Brown, and in the 2014 cycle, he helped each of them raise in excess of $1 million online for their campaigns. He also ran a multi-channel mail, telemarketing, and email fundraising campaign that ensured that Maryland Governor Larry Hogan raised the funds needed to surge past the threshold for Maryland’s matching funds program and ultimately win.

Prior to joining SCM Associates, Lou graduated first in his class from Boston College Law School, practiced corporate law at one of the country's top law firms, and had the privilege of spending seven years working for Mitt Romney in various capacities. During his time working for Mitt Romney, he gained invaluable experience in running digital, mail, and telemarketing programs, creating and approving marketing content in fast-paced, high-stakes environments, managing complex national operations, and working with some of the country's best strategic communication and marketing professionals.

During Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign, Lou served as a member of the campaign’s senior staff as Staff Secretary and Senior Adviser. Leveraging a unique blend of operational and management experience, political, communications, and marketing knowledge, and legal background, he was responsible for conducting the initial review of, and giving final approval on, all campaign content — from tweets to TV ads. At the same time, he served as the nerve center of the campaign, bridging gaps between all of its departments and ensuring appropriate communication between them. In addition, he oversaw the campaign's direct mail and telemarketing efforts, which raised approximately $250 million for the Romney Victory effort.

Prior to this, Lou launched Mitt Romney's Free and Strong America PAC, where he served as Chief Operating Officer and Counsel and managed the PAC's day-to-day operations until its ultimate wind down. This included helping to craft its mission, drafting all of its outward-facing content (including press releases and email communications), running its digital, direct mail, and telemarketing campaigns, and maintaining its website.

Lou also served as Deputy National Finance Director during Mitt Romney's first presidential run and as Associate Legal Counsel to the Governor during the Romney Administration.

In addition to his J.D. from Boston College Law School, Lou also holds a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Tufts University.

Lou lives in Windermere, Florida with his wife Erika, their daughter Kyla, their son Nick, and their English Bulldog Rory.

Jodi Schell

Jodi Schell, Copywriter

Jodi Schell is a multiple award-winning copywriter who holds a B.A. in History from Cedar Crest College and a M.A. in Political Science from Lehigh University.  Prior to joining SCM Associates, she honed her copywriting skills in the award-winning in-house creative department of a major book and magazine publisher.

She also worked as a Legislative Aide for a Pennsylvania State Senator and on numerous local, state, and national campaigns.

Politically active since the age of seven, Jodi crafts results-driven copy that is unique to each client.

Jodi lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and two daughters where she is active in the PTO. A proud dance/ theater/ softball mom, Jodi enjoys hiking, tennis, yoga, cooking, and escaping to the Jersey Shore and the Central Pennsylvania mountains with her family.

Gary Reed

Gary Reed, Copywriter

Gary Reed has written copy for websites, speeches, voter contact mail, email and especially fundraising letters for Republican candidates and causes in all fifty states.

A thirty year professional, Reed has worked and won awards for his copywriting for U.S. Senate campaigns, plus he's done extensive work for successful candidates for Governor and the U.S. House of Representatives.

A native of Iowa, Reed has written or helped write several books including the National Republican Congressional Committee Finance Manual (with Stephen Meyers), "Heroes Among Us" (with Ambassador Charles Larson), the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished American 60 th Anniversary book (with his wife Jackie) and “The Reagan Way Today.” He is currently working on a book tentatively titled, “The Fourth Pillar” that brings sports psychological techniques like relaxation, visualization, focus and mood regulation to the business world.

Gary Reed has worked for Karl Rove + Company and SCM Associates.

He lives in Granville, Ohio with his wife Jackie and their painted turtle Agnes. All three root for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jane Lamb

Jane Lamb, Administrative Assistant

Jane Lamb has over 30 years of administrative experience, including spending 10 years in Boston where she was the Executive Assistant to the President of Bank of New England. Upon returning to New Hampshire, she continued working in an administrative capacity in the banking and brokerage industries. In 2009, she began working as Administrative Assistant at SCM Associates and has been an integral part of the fundraising process, successfully managing the list ordering and marketing for our clients, among other projects.

Jane lives with her husband, Peter, and two children in Antrim, NH.
